Our first year, we spent more than was necessary because we bought more than needed; buying everything right down to a log book, while now I make my own using loose leaf paper in a binder, or printing forms off of the computer (which is good because it can be customized for our specific needs).
You have lots of options, such as borrowing the books from the school district (free), borrowing books from the library (also free), buying a curriculum (which can be pricey depending on the curriculum), and buying books individually and finding supplements online.
IŽd visit the different websites that the different companies (such as Seton, A Beka, Calvert) and see what is offered, and compare prices.
The cyber-charter schools are also an option if youŽre looking to keep cost down, because they send you pretty much everything you need. They are public schools done at home though, so youŽd have to stick with their schedule and curriculum (each school seems to have a different curriculum, so there is variety there as well).
