It´s not uncommon for bright kids to have problems in public school, and this seems to be getting worse due to the increased emphasis on standardized testing, NCLB, etc.

Begin by doing what you´re doing - talking to whoever you can find about it, going to the library and reading books about it, seeking out local homeschool groups, ordering various homeschooling catalogs, etc.

Do not worry about the flap in California. They are wrangling over finer points of California law, none of which applies to PA. We´ve had clearly legal home education here for twenty years.

In PA, the home education supervisor has to have either a high school diploma or the equivalent. That means either you or (if you are married) your husband must have either a high school diploma OR a GED. It´s ok if he is the supervisor even if you do all the teaching.

I have some information on the immunization laws on my web site (see below), as well as some info about the home education laws.

As Howard mentioned, public cyber-charter schools are another option you might find interesting. They are NOT the same as independent home education - there are pros and cons to each approach. The main pro is that they´ll choose the curriculum for your child - and that´s the main con as well.

Remember that your son does not have to attend school until he is age 8, so you´ve got plenty of time to get up to speed with him.
