Now is the time to renew (or to begin!) your subscription to our print quarterly newsletter, ´Pennsylvania Homeschoolers´-- and you can do this either right online (click on ´ENTER STORE´), or by mailing a check for $12 to PA Homeschoolers, 105 Richman LN, Kittanning PA 16201-5737.

This issue of our newsletter features again our engaging new layout— it´s a much snazzier look, and much easier to read and enjoy. We’ve had great feedback on our new ‘look’, and we know you’ll love #102. We thank our wonderful daughter Molly for her dedicated work as our Design Editor!

This issue has a special focus on the perennial ‘But What About Socialization???’ question. Here’s what I say in my ‘Letter from the Editor’:

“One thing that I’ve been struck by with the best homeschool families I’ve known, is that they don’t just sit around and wait for positive opportunities to arrive on their doorsteps, especial social opportunities. Instead, they actively seek out and even create options. And our teens often start taking the lead in this as they come of age—I think of teens who’ve started Geography Clubs, and public speaking groups, Shakespeare discussion groups and homeschool proms… We hope this issue may indeed encourage you to find or develop some new options for your kids that might really help them feel positive connections with others, through service, friendship, shared long-term meaningful activities (like co-ed volleyball!), shared faith traditions, joining to learn together in interactive online classes, and more.”

This issue also features all the ´regulars´ you´ve come to expect-- the children´s writing BACKPACK section, Barbara McMillan´s Special Needs column (this issue focusing on how to help your special needs child develop those challenging social skills that may not come so easily!), a full evaluator listing, legal updates (focusing on the California situation), ´First Steps´ column from our daughter-in-law Patricia Richman, Math by Kids, and more.

Also there´s a moving article on homeschooling a child with Type 1 Diabetes and an article on how one family made it through a very challenging medical crisis (was their teenage son having a stroke? a whirl of ambulance rides, MRI scans, many hours of waiting and praying, and more would tell...) with the help and support of a great medical staff and so many homeschool and family friends.

There´s an article looking at a pretty common homeschool problem that isn´t written about much-- when our kids feel in unfair competition with each other... and how to help when you see this happening in your family. And there´s the conclusion to the story of Peter, a dyslexic homeschool grad who´s now very happily working as an artist´s apprentice.

There´s also a further college admissions column from Peter Buskirk, author of ´The Admissions Game´ (see our online store to order this great book!).

We hope our print newsletter can continue to be a helpful support as you wind up this school year and begin making summer plans and choices for the coming year. We hope this new issue will also inspire you to share your stories about your own homeschooling with other PA families!

And for the NEXT issue (#103) we´re going to be looking at how homeschoolers are using the Internet for learning-- and for support and keeping in touch!

Sincerely,

Susan Richman, Editor, PA Homeschoolers

ps-- remember... whenever you order a subscription to our newsletter (new or renewal) you´ll get FREE SHIPPING on anything else that you might order at the same time!
